Fun World Dracula Dog Costume

by admin on April 2, 2009

If you have dogs that are tolerant of clothing and you are looking for a cool but easy-to-get-on costume, the Dracula Dog Costume is an awesome pick. There’s no need to buy fangs since they have their own and it washes up nicely on the gentle cycle in case they make a mad dash through the mud. We’ve had these costumes for two years and they are still in great shape but I have no idea where Amazon got the price of two dollars a piece, we paid $5.99 for them and they were worth every penny.

The costume isn’t complicated to get on any size dog but you do need to read the package to see which size will be best for you. I would have sworn that the small would fit the Dauschund but they needed the medium; if you are ordering online you’d be wise to order from a site that has the individual size charts for each costume listed on the product page. Because each costume is different you can’t say that a Dracula one will fit the same way as Superman or a ghost. This isn’t a full body / slip over costume so it isn’t as constrictive as some of the more expensive costumes but it still looks great on dogs of any color and size.

So what do you get with this costume? A cape and a star shaped clip that keeps the cape in place; it is attached / sewn to the one side of the cape so you won’t end up losing it when you are out and about. On the underside of the cape there is a piece of fabric with a little bit of elastic in it; you can use this to secure the back of the cape to the dog by sliding it under the dogs belly. This is optional, some people like to have the cape free flowing but if you have a dog that likes to take off, well, its better to have it secured so it doesn’t get stuck in something.

The dogs got a lot of laughs when they had their Dracula Dog Costumes on but two hours was about the max for any of them; they would start getting fidgety and you just knew that if they could get the cape in between their teeth they’d end up trying to pull or rip it off. We did have a confrontation with someone that said it was cruel to dress up any animal and that it was “unnatural”; I looked at her and asked her how natural it was to put a collar and leash on a “wild animal” [meaning the dog that she was walking]. I’d rather have a pet in something that has a lot of open area than something that completely covers them but if your pet is resistant to it and tries to squirm out of it, do everyone a favor and let them enjoy the holiday without a costume.

There are a lot of Dracula themed dog costumes on the market so it is going to be hard to find this exact one. Couple that with the fact that this is a seasonal item so if you try to get it outside the Halloween season and end up getting the correct costume. If you are ordering online make sure that they have a return policy that works for you; if you end up getting something that looks completely different that what was featured at the site you should be able to return it if it is still unopened or in new condition.

This comes in four sizes; petite, small, medium and large. There is an extra large version but the design and cape are a little different and it’s called the Deluxe Dracula Dog Costume. In hindsight I should have gone with the extra large size for the Rottie because he was a bit cramped and uncomfortable in the large size but we made it work and he tolerated it for a few hours. I found another website that sells a similar type of costume and that’s the one that I’ll have to go with for the bigger dogs so they are a little more comfortable.

Is this better than the more expensive Dracula costumes? I’ve put some of the twenty to thirty dollars costumes on the dogs and they looked good but unless you are taking your pet to a ton of parties or plan on having them wearing it more than a few times a season, it’s a waste to spend that much. You could make a cloth one but not everyone is skilled with sewing let alone measuring a dog for the pattern. If you can get this for under ten dollars and are happy with the way that it fits then this is a good pick and if taken care of it will last for more than a few years.

Costumes For Your Dog

by admin on March 31, 2009

A simple idea for many holiday occasions is to match the colors of your materials with the colors for that particular holiday.

For example, make a pink cape for Valentine’s Day and a green cape St. Patrick’s Day.

For holidays where several colors are used, consider using a base color for the cape, then sewing or gluing on stars, hearts or other shapes in the other colors.

Adding some type of hat or crown makes for a more complete dog costume. The hat can be the same color, more than one color, or have complementary colors to the cape.

See Dog Capes and Dog Party Hats for some basic instructions.

DOG COSTUME THEMES

Fit your dog costume ideas to the event your dog will be attending:

  • Is it a fancy dress party with “pirates,” “superheroes,” “Hawaii” or “wedding bells” as the theme?
  • Are you entering a dog costume contest with categories such as “Best Dressed Dog,” “Funniest Costume,” “Best Homemade Costume”?
  • Is it an anything goes type of event such as Mardi Gras, Halloween or New Year’s Eve?

MATERIALS TO USE

When making costumes for your dog, a wide range of materials can be used. Some suggestions are:

  • Crêpe and construction paper
  • Brown paper bags and cardboard
  • Store-bought fabrics
  • Old quilts, afghans and old clothes
  • Ribbon and yarn
  • Plain or colored aluminum foil and cellophane wrapping
  • Colored plastic bottles (liquid laundry detergent)

Tips for Dressing Dogs in Costumes

by admin on March 29, 2009

If you plan to take you dog out trick or treating on Halloween there are a few simple tips to reduce stress and anxiety in your pet. There is obviously going to be a lot of unusual activity and noise around your dog that evening, and it may be too much for your dog to handle. If your pet becomes so upset and agitated, why bother? After all, dogs in costumes are for our entertainment, not theirs. Please put their feelings first.

PRACTICE:

Dress your dog up in the costume your have selected a couple of times before the big day and walk him around in it as you are going to do on Halloween. This way at least he won’t be intimidated by this unusual apparel. If he is used to it he may relax and enjoy the walk about with all the extra activity being interesting, rather than distressing.

BE AWARE OF YOUR PETS ANXIETY:

Dogs in costumes will let you know by their actions if they are not going to tolerate being dressed up. I know it seems funny to watch a dog struggle when we try a hat or sunglaases on them, just for the entertainment value. But this is distressing and putting a dog in a full costume may be something they just won’t tolerate. Once again if your pet can’t get used to the costume, don’t bother.

BE VISIBLE:

Some dog costumes come with a reflective coating on them, but if you have one that does not, simply add some reflective tape which you can buy at the hardware store.

MAKE SURE THE COSTUME IS SAFE:

There should be no loose pieces or decorations on the costume that your pet can ingest. Your dog may find it way to appealing to chew off dangling buttons or material, which could cause choking or worse, a bowel obstruction. Also make sure nothing is hanging around his feet where he could get tangled or trip.

MAKE SURE THE COSTUME FITS PROPERLY

Just as you do with his collar, check and make sure you can get two or three fingers between your dog and the fabric or tie-on that goes around your pet to hold the costume in place. Any ties or wraps around the neck should have extra care and attention, making sure they are comfortable.

MAKE SURE THE COSTUME IS LIGHTWEIGHT:

Remember this is like us wearing a fur coat and then covering that up with more clothes. If the costume is too heavy he may overheat and become exhausted. Carry a pet water bottle and offer it often. Watch for excessive panting or lagging behind. If this happens remove the costume.

USE A LEASH AND MAKE SURE ID TAGS ARE ON YOU PET:

Obviously a common sense tip here with no explanation necessary.

CARRY YOUR OWN APPROPRIATE PET TREATS:

We should all know by now not to give our pets chocolate as it is toxic. Also anything with a wrapper or a lollipop stick is once again dangerous due to the possibility of choking or bowel obstruction if they are swallowed. If you have healthy dog treatsScience Articles, then your pet won’t feel left out of the evening’s festivities.
